In the first look only, I realized that the product design team has worked very hard. When comparing with the 3^rd Gen Learning Thermostat I observed that the 4^th Gen thermostat model is slimmer and has a more modern touch of aesthetics in terms of design.

It has three color options – polished silver, polished obsidian and polished gold which can add a modern touch to any home, no matter what interior design you have.

This time the 4^th Gen Learning Thermostat have a larger 2.7-inch display, and I noticed that the color accuracy and the resolution is a warm update here. The touch is more responsive compared to the 3^rd Gen. Now the display is not only bigger in size but also very crisp and clear which enhances the overall user experience of using this device.

You get a detailed guide by the Nest, or you can say a manual, thanks to it because it literally makes the installation process very straight forward. However, I faced some challenges not that major one but a minor issue with the compatibility check for my HVAC system. Still, I managed it to install with my DIY skills, but some users may need to take professional help.

While on the other hand, the Nest Thermostat 4^th Gen, I was very much surprised with the installation process. This time Nest has provided improved guidance including the checks to check the compatibility with the HVAC system we have, which makes it easier to install device with basic DIY skills, without seeking professional help. After installation and the initial setup, you will observe that everything is very user-friendly. I am in love with this product just because how easy it is to use and navigate through different settings, not only this you can also directly tweak the changes by swiping the fingers on the 4^th Gen thermostat.

Previously the Nest Learning Thermostat was using Nest app but with the 4^th Gen Learning Thermostat it is integrated with the Google Home app. Personally I can feel that the experience of the using the Nest Thermostat has improved a lot and with the better integration with the Google services, we can control the thermostat remotely from anywhere if required.

Smart Home Integration for Seamless Ecosystem

These days with the advancement of smart home devices compatibility with other devices, means connecting one device with another device which is crucial for me. No doubt, the Nest Learning Thermostat 3^rd Gen was very much compatible with various smart home systems, which makes everything so easy. I was easily able to integrate it with it with my other smart devices in the home such as smart lights and even my security cameras, which overall increased my smart home experience.

On the other hand, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4^th Gen takes the smart home integration to the next level, because of its Matter support. Matter is the new so-called protocol for seamless integration with other smart devices. Which means as compared to the 3^rd Gen Nest Thermostat, the 4^th Gen Nest Thermostat can connect to a broader range of smart devices seamlessly without any issues and this integration also supports most of the brands.

Right now I have integrated with my other matter-enabled devices in my home and till date the experience has been seamless. For instance, I have set my thermostat to adjust automatically when I am not at home or the time I leave for my studio where we test many products, which feature is not available in the 3^rd Gen Thermostat.

Not only this the 4^th Gen Nest Thermostat can also operate without Wi-Fi connection which is a plus point if your Wi-Fi went down for a moment. In contrast to the 3^rd gen, its lacs this feature which limits the functionality in case of internet outage.

Is it Worth Upgrading – Nest Learning Thermostat 3^rd Gen vs 4^th Gen

Few years back when I first purchased the 3^rd Generation, for me it worth for the investment at that time due to the features that it was offering. Now with the 4^th Generation, personally I found myself weighing the cost and the benefits. Compared to the 3^rd generation the newer model is a bit more expensive, but the features and functionality it is delivering, aesthetics design and the energy efficiency made it a great choice for me.

Still, if you’re on a budget the 3^rd Generation offers great value especially when packed with discount. I can confidently say it’s a reliable smart thermostat and delivering its promised features over many years. However, if you’re looking for something new and with latest technology, a better performance and more long-term value, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4^th Gen is worth the investment.
