As a tech enthusiastic person, I have been reviewing and sharing my personal experience with different kinds of smart home products, there are many devices which made me fall in love with them because of the values and comfort they have provided.

Sounds great right?

One of the most appealing products in the smart home automation category is the Nest Learning Thermostat. I have been using the Nest Learning 3rd Generation from few years, and recently few months back decided to upgrade to the 4th generation of Nest Learning Thermostat.

And I think it would be helpful to share my experience of Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen. I tried to compare these two models very deeply and highlighted all the major key differences between both thermostats, any improvement that we can see in the 4th Gen as compared to the 3rd Gen along with my personal thoughts.

First Impressions: Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

The day I unboxed the Nest Learning 3rd Gen Thermostat, I was totally impressed by its look and feel. Many thermostats still come with plastic built quality, but it was with a metal ring and many color options to choose based on your home interior like stainless steel, black, white and copper. Surprisingly to me it looks like a piece of art on the wall and not just a smart thermostat.

The 3rd Gen thermostat was equipped with a 2.08 inch of display, no doubt the display was vibrant and comes with a 480×480 pixels of resolution which makes anything easy to read even from a little distance.

On the other hand, my experience with the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat is great, and unboxing it feels like you’re unboxing a kind of premium device. In the first look only, I realized that the product design team has worked very hard. When comparing with the 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat I observed that the 4th Gen thermostat model is slimmer and has a more modern touch of aesthetics in terms of design.

It has three color options – polished silver, polished obsidian and polished gold which can add a modern touch to any home, no matter what interior design you have.

This time the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat have a larger 2.7-inch display, and I noticed that the color accuracy and the resolution is a warm update here. The touch is more responsive compared to the 3rd Gen. Now the display is not only bigger in size but also very crisp and clear which enhances the overall user experience of using this device.

The learning capabilities of the Nest Learning Thermostat is one of the most loved features by the users. From my personal experience I can confidently say that the 3rd Generation Learning Thermostat did an excellent job of learning my heating and cooling patterns over time.

I remember how surprised I was when it was adopting my heating and cooling patterns and then automatically adjusting the temperature based on my preference. It was like my personal assistant that understands very well what type of comfort I need and when.

While after using the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen I have noticed that there is a slight improvement in its learning feature. This time I have observed that it tends to adopt the pattern faster and even more accurate based on my routines.

With the launch of the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat, the learning capabilities is not just about the preference but also external factors like the weather. I have noticed that it adjusts the temperature with its AI-driven features during any unexpected weather change, which ensures my home to be always in the comfortable zone.

Sensors and Features: Enhanced Functionality in 4th Gen

The Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen is equipped with various sensors which caters to different functions. It has sensors like temperature sensor, humidity sensor, proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor. Based on my personal experience I can surely give it a thumbs up because of the way it displayed the time, weather information or also temperature when I approached towards it, which makes it feel interactive and engaging.

However, I found that the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat took this feature to the next level with many optimizations.

The new model comes with improved sensor accuracy and more compatibility options with other smart home devices. These enhanced sensors provide more accurate readings of temperature, weather etc. with better energy efficiency. I can also see in the Google Home app that the energy reports are more detailed, offering a comprehensive detailed insights on my energy usage.

Not only this, but it also suggests me ways to save even more on my energy bills. This feature is very much helpful for me in understanding how my daily habits impact energy consumption and how to save to it more.

Installation and User-Friendly Experience: Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

You get a detailed guide by the Nest, or you can say a manual, thanks to it because it literally makes the installation process very straight forward. However, I faced some challenges not that major one but a minor issue with the compatibility check for my HVAC system. Still, I managed it to install with my DIY skills, but some users may need to take professional help.

While on the other hand, the Nest Thermostat 4th Gen, I was very much surprised with the installation process. This time Nest has provided improved guidance including the checks to check the compatibility with the HVAC system we have, which makes it easier to install device with basic DIY skills, without seeking professional help. The setup was very much smoother and hassle-free.

After installation and the initial setup, you will observe that everything is very user-friendly. The classic rotating dial on the 3rd Gen was intuitive but the 4th Gen’s touch-sensitive display is more responsive and feels like an art on the wall. I am in love with this product just because how easy it is to use and navigate through different settings, not only this you can also directly tweak the changes by swiping the fingers on the 4th Gen thermostat.

Previously the Nest Learning Thermostat was using Nest app but with the 4th Gen Learning Thermostat it is integrated with the Google Home app. Personally I can feel that the experience of the using the Nest Thermostat has improved a lot and with the better integration with the Google services, we can control the thermostat remotely from anywhere if required.

These days with the advancement of smart home devices compatibility with other devices, means connecting one device with another device which is crucial for me. No doubt, the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen was very much compatible with various smart home systems, which makes everything so easy. I was easily able to integrate it with it with my other smart devices in the home such as smart lights and even my security cameras, which overall increased my smart home experience.

On the other hand, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen takes the smart home integration to the next level, because of its Matter support. Matter is the new so-called protocol for seamless integration with other smart devices. Which means as compared to the 3rd Gen Nest Thermostat, the 4th Gen Nest Thermostat can connect to a broader range of smart devices seamlessly without any issues and this integration also supports most of the brands.

Right now I have integrated with my other matter-enabled devices in my home and till date the experience has been seamless. For instance, I have set my thermostat to adjust automatically when I am not at home or the time I leave for my studio where we test many products, which feature is not available in the 3rd Gen Thermostat.

Not only this the 4th Gen Nest Thermostat can also operate without Wi-Fi connection which is a plus point if your Wi-Fi went down for a moment. In contrast to the 3rd gen, its lacs this feature which limits the functionality in case of internet outage.

Is it Worth Upgrading – Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Gen vs 4th Gen

Few years back when I first purchased the 3rd Generation, for me it worth for the investment at that time due to the features that it was offering. Now with the 4th Generation, personally I found myself weighing the cost and the benefits. Compared to the 3rd generation the newer model is a bit more expensive, but the features and functionality it is delivering, aesthetics design and the energy efficiency made it a great choice for me.

Still, if you’re on a budget the 3rd Generation offers great value especially when packed with discount. I can confidently say it’s a reliable smart thermostat and delivering its promised features over many years. However, if you’re looking for something new and with latest technology, a better performance and more long-term value, the Nest Learning Thermostat 4th Gen is worth the investment.

This device is not just a smart thermostat that will replace your traditional thermostat. But feels like a future-proof option that will serve my as well as your home for many years, thanks to the Matter integration in this tiny device.
